How to eat a lobster

No visit to Maine is complete without at least one lobster dinner; if you’ve never tasted this delicacy before, you don’t know what you’re missing. Eating lobster for the first time can be a bit of a challenge. You may wonder, what do I do with this? Here are a few tips for getting to the meat of the matter.

Generally, you’ll be served your lobster along with a wet napkin and a nutcracker. Put on the bib, and don’t worry about looking silly. Eating lobster can be messy business. Then, twist off the claws. Next, crack the claws open with the nutcracker and remove the meat.
After you’re done with the claws, twist off the tail from the body and snap off the tail flippers. You’ll find a little tasty meat in them, as well. Then, take your fork and remove the tail meat in one piece. Peel the top section of meat way and make sure you throw away the black vein that runs the entire length of the tail meat.

Next separate the shell from the body on the underside. Discard the green stuff; that’s the tomalley. Crack the underside of the body apart to get to the meat, which is in four pockets where the small walking legs join the body (the legs also hold some delicious meat).
If you don’t mind a few extra calories dip the lobster meat in melted butter for an even sweeter taste.

That’s it! Enjoy. Then, use the napkins to clean up after. Once you’ve had one lobster, they will always be part of your visit to Maine.
