TALK OF THE TOWN: Knox County
Caponigro holds annual photo show in Cushing
One of the foremost artists in digital photography, John Paul Caponigro will open his studio to the public this August for his fifth annual exhibition. The exhibition will take place the first four weekends in August from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at his studio, Caponigro
Arts, located at 73 Cross Road in Cushing. Many of the images in the exhibition will be on display for the first time. Caponigro will give gallery talks each Saturday at 3 p.m. Trained as a painter and a photographer, Caponigro combines photographic textures within fields of created and orchestrated color. His work is in numerous private and public collections, including Houston Museum of Fine Arts, Princeton Art Museum, The Estee Lauder Collection, The Pffeifer Collection in Zurich, and locally in the Portland Museum of Art and The Farnsworth Art Museum. In recognition of his work, the Maine Arts Commission awarded Caponigro a 2002 fellowship. The images in this exhibition are culled from his work over the past year; new images of the land and sea, which challenge the way we perceive and relate to the natural environment. Caponigros work reflects his concern for environmental issues. He will donate 10 percent of the proceeds of this exhibit to local and national environmental organizations. He is a pioneer in a new artistic genre and is committed to educating emerging artists. He teaches and lectures at universities throughout the year including MIT, Penn State University, International Center of Photography and the Maine and Santa Fe Photo Workshops. Along the Waterline will be offered July 29-Aug. 2, and Fall Foliage Oct. 14-18. The author of Adobe Photoshop Master Class published by Addison Wesley in 2000, Caponigro is currently working on the second edition of the book that will be released this fall. Roads will be sign-posted for the days of the exhibition, or call Caponigro Arts at 354-0578 for directions. Work can be seen at the Web site: www.johnpaulcaponigro.com.
