TALK OF THE TOWN: Waldo County
Belfast native publishedFrom the back cover: Reporter Sheldon Merrills plans for a relaxing three-day weekend are shattered early Friday morning when she awakens to the sound of sirens and the ringing of her telephone. Her newspaper editor tells her to cover the raging fire at a neighboring farm complex, owned by friends who had been the subject of her first agricultural page story. The conflagration takes a devastating toll on the dairy herd, but soon a more grisly discovery is made: that of a womans battered body. Murder and arson are terrifying news in the small city of Westburgh, N.Y. But the fatal fire scene is not the only intrigue Sheldon finds herself coping with on a weekend that gives her little peace of mind. Mystery surrounds both the handsome, eccentric benefactor David P. Bradford and his dying sister, Lucille, who makes a shocking confession to Sheldon, accompanied by a plea for help. Just as it appears that life is settling down to normal, Sheldon opens her door to a knock and faces the murderer. A former reporter for The Republican Journal and the Bangor Daily News, Carmelia Howland was not only an agricultural editor herself in the 70s, but she also served as editor of the St. Lawrence Plaindealer in Canton, N.Y. Later she was appointed director of public relations and publications at New York States Canton College, where she served for 12 years before taking early retirement. Jack Baker, a director with the Wallis Foundation stated, We hope Belfast, as its art scene continues to expand, will infuse enthusiasm in similar communities around the country to create their own quality theater and arts programs. It is extremely rewarding that the Wallis Foundation recognized the value of bringing together the local arts community with nationally recognized artists, stated Larraine Brown, the festivals artistic director. This is an exciting opportunity to showcase the abilities of writers, performers, directors and theater technicians from the Midcoast area. Also, the support the festival has received from the Wallis Foundation, the Belfast Arts Council and the New Century Community Grant has allowed us to attract the attention and participation of several prominent national artists. The 15-Minute Festival takes place at 7 p.m. Aug. 23 and 24 at the National Theater Workshop of the Handicapped, located at 96 Church St. in Belfast.
