CUSHING Built in the late 1700s, The Olson House, located on Hathorne Road in Cushing, is best know as the location where artist Andrew Wyeth painted "Christina's World" (1948, collection of the Museum of Modern Art, New York City).
The Olsons were neighbors of Wyeth and his wife Betsy and they became close with Christina and her brother Alvaro Olson. Wyeth studied and painted the Olsons and their home for more than 30 years, until their deaths in 1967 (Alvaro) and 1968 (Christina). During that time he produced about 300 works.
Tours of the house include information about Wyeth paintings most of them hang in the room where they were painted and visitors are allowed to view the three levels of the home and explore the different rooms.
The house was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1995 and has been administered by the William A. Farnsworth Library and Art Museum in Rockland since 1991. The Olson House is open 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily through Columbus Day. Admission for the house is $4 for all guests 18 years and older or $2 with Farnsworth Museum admission.
