JEWEL OF MAINE:

The Farnsworth Art Museum

ROCKLAND — The Farnsworth Art Museum in Rockland was founded in 1948 by the estate of Lucy Copeland Farnsworth, the last in the line of a prominent Rockland family. The original Georgian-style brick museum and art library houses the permanent collection of American art with a special focus on art related to Maine, including some 8,000 paintings, sculptures, prints, photographs and works on paper.

Located on Main Street (U.S. Route 1) the museum campus also encompasses the Wyeth Center and the Wyeth Study Center, opened in 1998 to study and present works by N.C., Andrew and James Wyeth. The Jamien Morehouse Wing, which opened in 2000, completed the museum’s Main Street facade between Elm and Museum Streets.

The Farnsworth Art Museum also administers two historic house museums: the Farnsworth Homestead, the Greek Revival home (1849-50) of the Farnsworth family; and the Olson House, site of Andrew Wyeth’s “Christina’s World” (1948), collection of the Museum of Modern Art, New York City), in nearby Cushing.

The Farnsworth Art Museum and its library are open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily through Columbus Day. In addition, the museum is open until 7 p.m. on Wednesdays with free admission through the summer. The Farnsworth Homestead, adjacent to the museum, is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily and the Olson House in Cushing is open 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily through Columbus Day. Admission for the Olson House is $4 for all guests 18 years and older or $2 with museum admission. After Columbus Day, hours are Tuesday — Saturday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Sunday 1 p.m. to 5 p.m., closed Monday; Homestead and Olson House closed.

Admission to the museum and surrounding buildings is $9 for adults with a $1 discount for senior citizens (65 or older). The fee for students 18 years and older with a valid ID is $5. There is no charge for members and children younger than 18 years and Rockland residents. Group discounts are available if booked in advance. After Columbus Day subtract $1 off above prices.
