Rockland Golf CourseSEASON: April - October PROFESSIONAL: Head pro Keenan Flanagan SUPERINTENDENT: Greg Howard. TEE TIMES/ FEES: 594-9322 TYPE OF COURSE: 18-hole public course owned by members. Tee times required. PAR: 70 for men; 73 for women. LENGTH: 6,041 yards from the blue tees, 5,831 from the whites and 5,457 from the reds. For men, there are five par 3s, 10 par 4s and three par 5s. For women, there are three par 3s, 11 par 4s and four par 5s. COURSE/SLOPE RATING: 122/67.6 from the blue tees, 120/66.9 from the whites and 119/71.8 from the reds. LAYOUT: The course is fairly open and flat; however, small greens mean a golfer must make accurate shots. Many great rounds are made (or dashed) on the three consecutive tough par 3s holes 9-11. The 595-yard, par-5 15th is one of the longest holes in the state. A golfer must navigate the par-3 18th, which includes hitting over a deep quarry, to complete a round. HISTORY: Golf has been played in Rockland since 1916 when a 9-hole, 2,400-yard, par-34 course was established. In 1932, Boston-based course designer Wayne Stiles rebuilt the layout and extended it to 3,100 yards. Rockland resident Roger Sorrent played a key role in improving the course and establishing the back nine holes in 1964-65. GOLF MAINE COURSE PROFILES: Goose River, North Haven, Rockland, Samoset |
