LAYOUT: While it is one of the most beautiful courses in New England, it is rife with trouble, including large, fast greens, plenty of bunkers, many tree-lined holes and considerable water. The course has many breathtaking views of Penobscot Bay. Six holes border the ocean and there are ocean vistas on 14 of the 18 holes. The front nine is relatively open and the back nine tighter. There are many challenging holes, but none more than the finishing par-4 18th, with out-of-bounds left and right and water and bunkers guarding the green. There have been recent changes to several holes.

HISTORY: The course was established in 1902, although golf had been played around the hotel for several years before the original 9-hole, 3,417-yard course was developed. The Bay Pines Hotels was built in 1887. It was renamed the Samoset for the Indian chief. The 18-hole course was completed in the mid-1970s. Many course changes have occurred in recent years, including a new clubhouse several years ago.
