YOUR GUIDE TO TO LIFE IN MIDCOAST MAINE
|
||
Out and AboutHelp us find those special places.Well, there is nothing like a couple of days of weather that even begins to smack of summers approach to get people out and eager for all manner of fun. Hitting the streets of Rockland last Friday evening in weather that was decidedly easy to take was a real treat for a couple of reasons. First, we saw a number of people walking through the downtown area carrying copies of this free guide to the good life in Midcoast Maine. That was refreshing, indeed. Second, it was gallery night along Rocklands business district and there were plenty of people to be found moving in and out of the many great galleries the city has to offer. Notable along the street were the many vehicles sporting plates from many a different state. It must be getting to that time of year. Bring it on! * * * * * Keep a watch on our harbors Rockland, Thomaston, Rockport, Camden, Belfast, Tenants Harbor and Port Clyde. Already the masts are beginning to sprout and the marina docks moved into place which is a sure sign of the pleasure boat season getting all revved up. And that also means that the historic Maine windjammer fleet will begin its cruising season in earnest. Many of these graceful craft are offering discounts to Maine residents throughout the month of June. In fact, if youre interested in what its like to take a windjammer vacation, keep your eyes on Steppin Out as we offer a special feature on that very subject in our June 14 issue. You can find plenty of useful information through the Maine Windjammer Association at P.O. Box 317P, Augusta, Maine 04332; 1-800-807-WIND; or visit them at: www.sailmainecoast.com One of the most beautiful sights to be seen in Midcoast Maine is the windjammer fleet heading out of Rockland Harbor on Monday mornings at about 10 a.m. Head down to the Rockland Public Landing or take a walk along the Rockland Breakwater. And bring your camera! * * * * * The black flies might be bothersome but if you use some bug repellent or catch a cooperating breeze, this is a good time of year to get in some hiking. The trail that begins just beyond Mirror Lake on Route 17 in West Rockport (parking lot on right, going toward Union) is an excellent walk for families. Dont overlook trails in Camden Hills State Park, Mt. Megunticook and Bald Rock. These are especially good trails to hit before the summer crowds arrive. Also, the park area at Camden Hills that leads down to the edge of Penobscot Bay (on right side of Route 1 going toward Lincolnville) is a fine family experience. One of the nice things about hiking at this time of year is that deciduous trees have yet not developed their thick leaf cover, thus it is possible to grab some expansive views that soon will disappear. Try exploring the Osborn Finch Preserve in Waldoboro. This small, 11-acre preserve is located on the banks of the Medomak River. Parking is available at Dutch Neck Road, off Route 32. Hiking trails lead to the shore. * * * * * Dont forget, we want to hear from you concerning your favorite getaway locations, hiding spots, etc. Drop us an e-mail at: kelly@steppinoutmaine.com Until next week, have fun in whatever you do while youre steppin out in Midcoast Maine. |
