BAR HARBOR — Music is in the air at the Bar Harbor Municipal Building as Bar Harbor Theatre prepares to finish the run of its first musical, the popular story of a long and happy marriage. “I Do! I Do!” by Tom Jones and Harvey Schmidt, will wrap up production on Aug. 10, with a small handful of shows beginning this Thursday.

“I Do! I Do!” is a musical of unusually intimate scale, with a two-person cast. All the action transpires in the bedroom of the couple, as 50 years of their married life passes, beginning with their wedding night in 1894. At Bar Harbor Theatre the couple is played by Chicago-based actors Bernie Yvon and Heidi Kettenring. Yvon grew up in Old Town and is a lifelong friend of actor-manager Cook. He studied acting at Northwestern University and has developed his career in Chicago, becoming one of the most successful leading men in that city’s thriving musical theater scene. Yvon has been featured on Broadway as Harry Houdini in the Tony Award-winning musical, “Ragtime,” and has worked at many top regional theaters, as well.

Kettenring is also a graduate of Northwestern University and has rapidly made a name for herself in Chicago, having been called “one of the finest singers working in musical theater today” by Chicago Arts and Entertainment.

At the helm for the show is director Michael Weber, moonlighting from his regular position as artistic director of Little Theatre at the Center, an Equity theater in Hammond, Ind. Weber has worked with both Yvon and Kettenring in the past, as well as with music director Matthew Ellenwood, also a professional from the Chicago area.

“I Do! I Do!” plays at the Bar Harbor Municipal Building Aug. 7-10, with shows each evening at 8 p.m. and a Sunday matinee at 2 p.m. Following this Friday’s performance there will be a special cabaret encore, with local musical talents joining the cast in song.
