As the largest state in New England, Maine offers plenty of attractions for visitors. With more than 3,500 miles of coast along the Atlantic Ocean, Maine invites visitors to explore its best features. The state is well known for its iconic lighthouses that line up most of its coast. These lighthouses have served as inspirations for artists and as settings for countless films and productions. The Cape Neddick Lighthouse in York County is one of the most famous lighthouses in Maine. Located in Cape Elizabeth, the Portland Head Light is another iconic lighthouse.

Of course, Maine is home to dozens of great beaches that are enjoyed by residents and tourists during the summer. Harbor Beach in York and Gooche’s Beach in Kennebunk are great examples of Main’e top waterfront attractions.

As the only national park in the state, Acadia National Park is a top waterfront attraction. Covering more than 35,000 acres on Mount Desert Island, this national park offers great outdoor recreation for the entire family.

Located in the small town of Kennebunkport, Walker’s Point is the former summer house of president George H.W. Bush. Tourists can enjoy a scenic drive along the coast passing through this home. The hits keep comin’: Stamps feature New England lighthouses

When you visit the coastal area of Maine, there are few restaurants that are sure to spark your taste buds to life. Friars’ Bakehouse is a quaint café that is situated in the middle of other street businesses. The small café serves soup and sandwiches, and it is open for breakfast and lunch. Items for breakfast include sticky buns and homemade muffins. If a steak is on your mind, then try the Texas Road House. You can toss the peanuts on the floor while waiting for your meal or devour the cinnamon bread and butter. Moe’s Original BBQ has ribs that fall off the bone and side orders that will make your mouth water. Choose from cornbread to cheesy macaroni. Dysart’s is a fun environment where you can sit and talk with friends while eating a large hamburger with onion rings. For a south of the border meal, try Miguel’s. The restaurant serves quality tacos, enchiladas and other Mexican favorites.

My family and I went on a road trip all across the country about a year ago. We started at Columbus, Ohio and, after we had charted a course, packed some things and turned on the home alarms Columbus service, we were on our way. We passed through most of the states on the east coast, but one place that still stands out in my mind to this day is Maine. And, while I hate to admit it, the reason isn’t because of any natural attractions or sites – it’s because of the food.

Hugo’s – This was the first restaurant we visited during our trip through. I had never had seafood that tasted so fresh nor was so expertly prepared as what I tasted and experienced in this fantastic establishment. And just the atmosphere itself was brilliant.

Fore Street – We found the establishment quite by accident during out travels but I still had to take a look inside. However, once I caught a whiff of those rustic dishes cooked from the wood oven, I knew we couldn’t pass this up.

Like I said, I don’t remember much about Maine beyond that but if you are looking for some of the best food on the east coast, Maine is a great place to start.

Maine’s coastal area is a great place to partake in recreational activities. From canoeing and kayaking to fishing, here’s a few popular recreational activities one can enjoy while in the beautiful coastal area of Maine.

Go canoeing or kayaking. Some coasts aren’t safe or suitable to be explored by canoe or kayak. Luckily, Maine’s coast is ideal. Some spots along Maine’s coast can be tough to navigate, especially if you choose to explore the area in a canoe, yet it’s still feasible. To truly enjoy your canoeing or kayaking experience along Maine’s coast, consider joining a canoe or kayak tour beforehand.

Go sailing. Sailing along Maine’s coast is a great way to view some of the area’s historic lighthouses. It’s also a great way to witness some of Maine’s wildlife in their natural state or habitat. Seals, seabirds, whales and porpoises are a few animals you can expect to encounter while sailing along Maine’s beautiful coast. Sailing is indeed a fun way to enjoy Maine’s scenic coast.

Go fishing.

Fishing is another fun recreational activity enjoyed by many along Maine’s scenic coast. Striped bass, mackerel and bluefish are a few popular fish that can be found in Maine’s coastal waters.

The coast of Maine offers fun things to do that suit every taste and budget. If you just want to relax on the beach, York and Ogunquit offer plenty of soft white sand If you want to experience the rocky Maine coast, try visiting Boothbay Harbor or Bar Harbor. There are boat tours that leave from both towns that take visitors out to some of the many islands that dot the coastline, as well as fishing and whale watching tours. Looking for thrills? Funtown USA in Saco offers a variety of exciting rides as well as one of the largest water parks in New England. Palace Playland in nearby Old Orchard Beach offers rides as well. If shopping is more of your thing, be sure to stop at the Kittery Outlets or visit the LL Bean flagship store in Freeport. Or take a drive down Route 1 and stop at one of the many antique and gift shops, or stop at a candy shop for some saltwater taffy and homemade ice cream (Brown’s over by York’s Nubble Light serves up a yummy scoop). And the Clam Shack in Kennebunk and Mike’s in Wells serve up great seafood…because no trip to Maine is complete without visiting a clam shack!

Maine’s coastline is brimming over with beautiful and adventurous places for any avid fisherman. Maine is home to thousands of lakes and rivers and is a dream place for anyone who enjoys fishing. Maine hosts a variety of fish in its freshwater and its salt water. Trout, salmon and haddock are all very popular fish that inhabit the beautiful Maine waters.

One of the most popular vacation and fishing spots in Maine is in Aroostook County. It is nicknamed the “Crown of maine” and has over 2,000 lakes and streams in which to fish or ski. It is not out of the question to see sharks as well in the coastal waters of exquisite Maine. If serious and adventurous fishing is what thrills you then you might want to consider the Portland area. Shark fishing is very common in Maine, and the predominant species of shark is the blue shark. It is not for the faint hearted though. The most common way to attract sharks is to drift while trailing a chum bucket.

Whether you are more inclined to spend time fly fishing or the more adventurous shark fishing, Maine’s coastline is sure to have something to suit your fancy.

Fishing on the shoreline of Maine’s coast is a great way to get out and spend some quality time with the family. The fresh ocean waters and ocean breeze offer a pristine opportunity for some recreational time. By planning ideally for fishing along Maine’s coast its possible to get the most out of each and every fishing trip.
Make sure that everyone has a fishing license. Fishing licenses can typically be purchased at local department and sports specialty stores. Do some research regarding the fishing laws of Maine’s coast. These could include the fish you can and can not keep as well as how many fish its legal to catch on any given day. Not knowing these laws could result in legal fines in the event of a random officer search. Keep up to date with current fishing laws to avoid these penalties.
Discuss the best prospective fishing spots with some of the local fishermen. Although they might not be able to direct you to the exact spot, having a good idea of where to fish can greatly enhance your chance of catching fish. Remember to have fun while your out fishing along the shoreline of Maine’s coast and to be safe!
